GENERAL NOTES ON THE GAME

Spoilers

This walkthrough (necessarily) gives away a lot of the twists and turns of the story line. It's not meant to be read straight through, or even played straight through unless you're completely uninterested in anything but the fastest possible course through the game. (What a waste!)

If you've never played Blade Runner before, you're really cheating yourself if you don't try to play it through at least once without using this walkthrough or another cheat sheet. The storyline and visuals are fabulous, and worth some effort from you before you just yawn your way through with this guided map.

If you find yourself really stuck, try to use this walkthrough just to get a quick hint. Use the Contents list above to get you to the right spot.

Background

There's more to this game than the game. You'll find your playing experience greatly enhanced if you see and read some of the supporting material. First, you should definitely watch the movie-the Director's Cut of Blade Runner that was released just a few years ago. Reading the original book, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, will fill in a few details. Beyond that, reading some of Philip K. Dick's other books will give you a better feel for the "world" around the game-I recommend Ubik,The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, and A Scanner Darkly.

Then there are two sequels to the original novel and the movie, written by K.W. Jeter. They don't add anything to the game, but if you like everything else, I highly recommend The Edge of Human and Replicant Night.

Game Play Notes

Several of the major characters in the game may be human or replicant. Who is which is set when you start a new game, and cannot be changed during game play. It's up to you to figure out which is which, and what to do about it. Your character (Ray McCoy), on the other hand, may be a human, a replicant, or a human who sympathizes with replicants. Your actions at various points determine which.

The game reportedly has thirteen different endings. Not all endings are obtainable from a single game start, but several alternates are possible in each game depending on how you play McCoy's actions.

In game settings, select the "question mark" face so that you have control over which questions to ask.

In game settings, clicking on "Designer Cut" reduces the amount of descriptive chatter from McCoy. This speeds up the game, but cuts out a lot of interesting comments and internal dialogue. Leave this setting off until you've played through a couple of times.

The Voight-Kampff test allows you to ask up to ten questions. Unless you ask a skilled mix of easy, medium and hard questions, the test may terminate without giving an absolute determination whether the subject is human or replicant. If you ask too many hard questions, the subject may get angry and end the test early. If you save the game right before the test, you can keep trying until you get it right.

Walkthrough Notes

SAVE GAME wherever it's indicated in the walkthrough.

DRAW your GUN wherever it's indicated in the walkthrough.

To "talk" to a character means keep clicking on them until they stop giving you a meaningful response (usually, they start repeating some simple phrase). Sometimes you only get one or two questions before they walk or run away, or react in some other way, so choose your questions carefully.

Throughout the walkthrough, options are presented in vertically-aligned pairs. If the options influence the direction of the game, codes indicate which direction you'll be pushing things:

  • BR means you're a human, a Blade Runner doing his job.
  • RP means you're a replicant cutting corners to save your buddies.
  • RS means you're a human replicant sympathizer.
  • BNL means you're being nice to Lucy.
  • BND means you're being nice to Dektora.

If there is no option code, the option changes some aspect of game play but does not affect outcome.

IF YOU ARE A BLADE RUNNER or
TO ESCAPE WITH ALL REMAINING REPS

The End...
...until you play again!

Endings

Reputedly, there are thirteen endings to Blade Runner. Some are easier to get to than others. Reaching any one depends on the startup state of the game.

Here are the known endings, and hints on how to get to them.

  • Real Blade Runner, away with Crystal
You've killed the replicants and earned your stripes as Blade Runner 61661. If you managed to keep Crystal from being killed by the bomb in the cave, and did not have to kill her as a RepSymp, you get to go away with her. Have fun and be sure to take your Viagra.
  • Real Blade Runner, away with Gaff
You've killed the replicants and earned your stripes as Blade Runner 61661. Crystal got killed by the bomb in the cave, or you had to kill her as a RepSymp. Gaff has some nice things to say.
  • Replicant, away with all other Reps
You killed Crystal and managed to prove yourself to Clovis and Sadik. Clovis or Crystal called you at the end. (You can ignore Lucy or Dektora's call and proceed to the moonbus, too-- they'll be there to join you.) (There are several variations of this end, with different combinations of reps on the moonbus. Each of these endings may represent one of the "thirteen" endings.)
  • Replicant, away with Lucy
You were really nice to Lucy at every turn, and not nice to Dektora. Lucy called you at the end, and you decided to meet her at Crazy's, instead of going to the moonbus. Away you went into the sunset.
  • Replicant, away with Dektora
You were really nice to Dektora at every turn, and not nice to Lucy. Dektora called you at the end, and you decided to meet her at Crazy's, instead of going to the moonbus. Away you went into the sunset.
  • Replicant, away alone
You were really nice to Lucy or Dektora at every turn, and not nice the other. But in the shootout on top of Crazy's, you let Crystal kill the RepFem before you could in turn kill Crystal. Away you went into the sunset, all alone.

UNKNOWNS

For the record, I'm not sure how to get McCoy to these endings as a RepSymp instead of as a Replicant, or if that's even an option.

Gathering all the DNA data (Tyrell, Sebastian, Eisenduller) might make a difference in the ending dialogue, as to whether it will be "enough" or "not enough."

I haven't figured out if the radiation goggles or Gordo's lighter have any effect on the game. (I haven't played it through since being passed along the pointers to these items.)

WALKTHROUGH CREDITS

This walkthrough is by far the longest, most detailed and most organized one I know of for Westwood's great game. It's 90% my own work, written on my laptop as I played on my main workstation. A number of hints, ideas, alternate paths and tricks were gleaned from discussion in alt.games.bladerunner-- and I'm sorry I can't remember who to credit for each one. I'll try and do better from here on out.

Just before I did the initial HTML conversion, Cameron Starr (cameron@chictochic.demon.co.uk) posted a new, fairly detailed walkthrough that added at least five important things I'd missed. Those items have been folded in to this walkthrough. Thanks to Cameron and to "trithor1@aol.com" (who's credited as originating the walkthrough) if that's not the same person.

"P12" posted some additional material after rev 1.0.0, including the info on how to get away with Dektora or alone, the alternate way to confront Izo (by going up through Hawker's Circle) and the alternate ways to deal with Gordo taking a hostage (shoot at Crystal's gun, let Crystal shoot him).

The Version 1.1.0 update also benefited from a reading of the walkthrough posted on http://www.bladezone.com. Thanks to the author(s).

Versions 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 incorporate several changes received from "blacknight."
